AUGUST HUBERT ERLING, Jr., Lifelong Bristol Resident

August Hubert Erling, Jr., 87, of Bristol, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 9th, 2014, at Sheriden Woods Health Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Phyllis Lynn Erling for 64 years.

August was born on May 13th, 1926 in Bristol, CT, the son of the late August and Olga (Stange) Erling. He graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School, Bristol Public Schools, Porter School of Design and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

August was employed as a Draftsman, Sales Engineer and Quality Control Manager as he was promoted through the ranks at E. Ingraham Industries, Torrington Company and Chapman Machine. His interests included hunting, fishing, gardening, old airplanes and family genealogy.
As a lifetime member and archivist of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, as well as a member and chairman of the Immanuel Lutheran Board of Deacons, he was the co-author of “The Story of Immanuel Congregation – 100 Year History”. As a member of the CT Genealogical Society,  he researched and published  genealogies for the Lynn, Foster, Stange, Reich and Erling families, some tracing four descendants directly to the Mayflower, as well as Norway, Germany and Russia. His interest also included memories of life on Cedar Lake where he lived for 65 years.

He leaves three sons, Gordon (Michele), Kenneth (Carol) and Robert Erling; two daughters, Evelyn Palmisano (William) and Jeanne Allen; three sisters, Anita Klepps, Elaine Prindle, Myrle Behrendt, one brother; Roald (Porky) Erling and was pre-deceased by a brother, Richard Zagarodney; Grandchildren: Benjamin Erling, Ashley Erling, Carrie Palmisano, William Palmisano III (Wendy), Victoria Palmisano-Evangelisti (Todd), and Great Grandchildren: Ava and Emily.  

A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 154 Meadow  Street, Bristol, CT 06010 at the convenience of the family. Memorial Contributions may be made to H. Lane Bridges Tuition Assistance Fund c/o: Immanuel Lutheran Church, 154 Meadow Street, Bristol, CT   06010.
