I was almost an adult before it really sank in that ours was a step-family. Sure, I always understood the nature of Grandma and Grandpa’s “second marriage”, but to me, she was never, ever “step-grandma”. Just Grandma – loved and adored because she loved and adored us. All of us, equally.

Grandma and Grandpa are a very big part of why I’ve always believed I grew up in a magical, golden age of families. My memories of summer backyard picnics, legendary Christmas Eve parties, and hot chocolate at the kitchen table after night skiing are the stuff of storybooks and movies. Grandma radiated such joy in bringing her blended family together at holidays, and it was contagious! Christmas Eve was the best day of the year and the anticipation of the party that night at Grandma and Grandpa’s was even more exciting than Christmas day for me. As an adult I now realize just how hard she worked to pull off all those family gatherings! She had a tiny kitchen and no Costco, but what she lacked in conveniences she made up for with boundless energy and tireless devotion to her family.

Grandma’s legacy lives on every December 24th in my family. Since Nicholas was a baby, our Christmas Eve parties have grown bigger and bigger. Now…it’s my son’s favorite day of the year. And that’s a priceless gift from Grandma.

Grandma made room in her heart for all of us, and forever she’ll hold a special place in mine.
