Catherine Z. Mecca

Catherine Z. Mecca, 80, of Bristol, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Tuesday afternoon, May 1, 2018.  She was the wife of 50 years to Donald M. Mecca.

Catherine was born on October 15, 1937 in Bristol the daughter of the late Naoumes and Rita (Poulos) Zissopoulos and was a proud lifelong resident.  She graduated from the University of Vermont and received her Masters and 6th Year Degree at the University of Hartford. While at UVM she was member Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Catherine had been a 4th grade teacher in the Bristol School System, but left to raise her two children. When her children were grown, she joined Donald at the Wilton Pharmacy in Wilton, CT.  She enjoyed working side by side with her husband. Catherine had been a member of St George Greek Orthodox Church, New Britain. 

Catherine loved to read but most of all was devoted to her family.  Her grandchildren were the light of her life and enjoyed spending time with them. In addition to her husband, she leaves her daughter and best friend Cary Rubbo and her husband Nick, grandchildren Dana, Zoe and Reed of Harwinton; brother Custy Zissopoulos and his wife Melanie. She was predeceased by her son, Daryl N. Mecca who passed in 2009.

Catherine’s funeral service will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 301 W. Main St., New Britain.  Those wishing to attend are asked to go directly to the church. The Mecca family invites friends and loved ones to calling hours on Sunday, May 6, 2018 between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. at O’Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Avenue, Forestville/Bristol.  A Trisagion Service will be held at 6:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Catherine’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter, 200 Executive Blvd S #4b, Southington, CT 06489.  To leave an online message of condolence, share a memory or a photo, please visit Catherine’s tribute page at www.OBrien-FuneralHome.com.
