John Richard Hartman

Tribute

John R. Hartman, “Jack,” born September 21, 1931 in Meriden, CT, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2021. He was the loving husband of Virginia (Caregnato) Hartman for 68 years. John graduated from the UConn School of Pharmacy in 1953, and was the former owner of Bristol Pharmacy. He served our country in the US Army, was a National Director of the Jaycees, President of the Bristol Jaycees, former Director of the German-American Society of Bristol, and past President of the Advocates of the Senior Center. He was also a member of the Bristol Gem and Mineral Club, Geology Club of Bristol, HS Liederkranz Society and a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years.

John was very active in his community. He had a jovial personality, and he loved people. He cared deeply for his family and friends, and cherished times of celebration with them. In retirement, he had the opportunity to travel the world with his wife, Virginia. He was strongly dedicated to his Catholic faith. He was proud of his German heritage, an avid gardener, traveler, photographer, and researcher of genealogy.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia, his children Jeanne (Hanley) Matty, John T. Hartman and his wife Bonnie, Mary Jo Valdez and her husband Scott, Michael Hartman, Lynne Hartman and her husband Frank Caestecker; grandchildren Emmeline Matty and her fiancé Josh Mueller, Siobhan Matty, Michael A. Hartman, Petra Hartman, Alana Valdez, Sam Valdez, Lisa Hartman and her partner Amelia Calbry-Muzyka, Thomas Hartman, Maks Caestecker, Sander Caestecker; great-granddaughter Ainsley Mueller; brother Philip Hartman, sister-in-law Marilyn Hartman and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
John is predeceased by his brother James Hartman, his sister Mary Jane Ceruti, brother-in-law Richard Ceruti and sister-in-law Majorie Hartman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021 at 11:30AM directly at St. Gregory Church, 235 Maltby St. in Bristol. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, at 522 Terryville Avenue in Bristol.

The family respectfully asks everyone who attends to wear masks while at the church and cemetery.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date due to the pandemic.
